Starting about 4 months ago, the website started getting a little slow. It was so slow for some people that it wouldn’t actually load the whole site. It kept stopping halfway and images and everything else were getting all jumbled up. This was, of course, a bad thing.
So, I did some poking around and troubleshooting to see what the problem was. Some or the reason why the website was a little slower than before was because of more traffic, which is never a bad thing, but it shouldn’t have been that bad. So, I kept looking high and low for what could possibly causing such a fuss.
Then I came to the conclusion that life is short and instead of spending hours troubleshooting something on my site, I could be spending hours with my newborn. To that end, I made the executive decision to scrap the old site and spend some big bucks (well medium-sized bucks) and upgrade to the minor leagues (not quite to major leagues yet).
JLPT Boot Camp is Growing
I started the site about a year and a half ago in order to keep me motivated and moving toward my goal of passing the N1. The first month I was thrilled to have an amazing 300 people come to my site! They even commented on an article.
But recently JLPT Boot Camp has grown past that mark. The website has received over 5000 unique visitors just this last month (5,844 to be exact) and continues to grow each month. This is absolutely astounding to me, and I really appreciate all the support, the comments and the emails I’ve received.
So to handle all those visitors, and all the (hopefully) future visitors, I needed to do some serious website work before it all came crashing down. With any luck, the site should stay pretty smooth and fast in the coming months as well.
A Sign of Things to Come
I also needed to change some things around because the old setup really limited my ability to add and take things away. With the new setup, I’ll be able to make changes a lot more easily. Chances are pretty good that new things will be appearing (and maybe disappearing) over the next couple of months.
One of the first things that I will most likely try to get implemented is some kind of rating system. I’ve been wanting to get that going for awhile, but worried about all the work I would need to do to get it up and running. With the new changes it should be a tad bit easier to get it installed and going.
When I get time, I’m also going to do a little more organizing and cleaning up to make sure resources are easier to find and the site as a whole is easier to get around. Right now some of the most valuable resources are a little buried in the site and I’d like to move those up so that they are easier to find.
