JLPT N5 Kanji – 気 – ki

JLPT N5 Kanji – 気 – ki post image

This is 5-Minute Kanji, and today, we’re diving into a breath of fresh air — the kanji for spirit, energy, or mood: 気.

Mnemonic:
That’s the spirit! The KEY is to follow the X on the map through the “breath” of the mountain.

Onyomi:

ki

Kunyomi:

None commonly used
(no everyday Japanese reading)

The kanji 気 shows up in thousands of Japanese words — for mood, spirit, atmosphere, breath, and even “air.” Visually, it’s steam rising over rice: the top part (气) is abstract vapor, the bottom portion is a simplified version of the kanji 米, a grain of rice. Imagine the steam that rises from a fresh bowl of rice — it fills the air, lifting your spirits and spreading “ki.”
When you build your mnemonic, anchor it in “ki” and think of things that match the sound: “key,” “Kiwi,” “keen,” or even “Kleenex.” There’s no common kunyomi, so focus on recognizing compound words and how the kanji acts as a building block for expressions about energy, weather, attitude, and life force.

Mnemonic Factory

A Funky monkey eats rice from a steaming bowl of rice symbolizing what 気 looks like.

Monkey like!

Visually, this can be pretty simple. The top part looks like steam rising. Actually, there is another kanji, 汽, that looks very similar and means “steam” as in steam-powered. We just need to add an X to the bottom. This was originally the kanji for rice, 米, but has been simplified over the years. So you can use the elements to imagine a bowl of steaming rice. Perhaps to help you imagine it better, you can picture the rice in a bowl with two criss-crossed legs.

For sounds, try linking:

  • KEY — the key to good moods!
  • KIwi — sipping the ki of a kiwi smoothie
  • funKI monKI — the monkey with the most spirit!

Putting it together:
Imagine a spirited funKI monKI eating a bowl of steaming rice.
